Our History...

From a modest start in a rented building in New Hamburg Ontario in 1962, Swenco Limited has matured into a state of the art facility in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada.

From its humble start, with the strong support from wife Una, and a team of skilled employees, founder Dermot (Derry) Sweeny built Swenco's impeccable reputation on Quality and customer service.  Derry knew that by providing the best quality products in the world, at second-to-none service, it would only be a matter of time before Swenco flourished.

Sweeny launched the business as a stamping and assembly supplier to area electronics firms.  By the mid 60's the firm had branched into steel shanks for the footwear industry and then hardware items as the electronics industry in North America reeled from Japanese competition.

In the late 1960's Swenco established in Waterloo and survived with innovation at a time of great turmoil for small manufacturers.  A major city fire destroyed the Swenco factory in January 1972, but the Sweeny's were able to continue uninterrupted in a small Kitchener die company they had purchased just months before the fire.

The acquisition of the present property in 1973 marked an upward course for the owners.  A mid-1970's venture into more footwear components saw Swenco make the first pre-moulded insole in North America, but again a flood of imports wrought havoc on this sector.  However a move to supply components for the safety footwear industry proved successful in the early 1980's catapulting Swenco to North America's leaders in the production of protective sole plates and to export clientele worldwide.

Now, Swenco continues to flourish with the same mindset that started the company.  Quality and Customer service are Number 1!   While still a major contributor to the footwear industry, Swenco also makes products for the Auto, Hardware, Promotional, and Fencing industries among others.  We now have two facilities, which include fully automated press lines, computerized plastic injection moulding equipment, a fully equipped Tool Room including CNC, and a state of art Testing Laboratory.

Since most of our Safety Footwear products are manufactured to meet and exceed the strict standards of the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) we are very proud to have been awarded the prestigious level of "Category Certified" by CSA. This is a level usually reserved for substantially larger manufacturers of CSA certified components and a level that has never been achieved by a manufacturer of Safety Footwear Components.  This is a strong reflection of the level of Quality Assurance that has been established for every product we produce.

Swenco and our employees are proud of each and every product we produce.  We take pride in providing our Customers with the best quality products in the world of their type.  Please take a moment and see some of our fine products.  And don't hesitate to contact us if you have questions.

Swenco's executive team includes President and Co-founder Una Sweeny, General Manager Paul Sweeny, Operations Manager Robert Sweeny, Sales and Marketing Manager John Sweeny, Customer Service Manager Paul Mackie, Quality Assurance Manager Guy Tetreault and Toolroom Manager Peter Wilkans.  Success wouldn't be possible without our exceptionally loyal and dedicated production staff and management team.

Generation gap?

Swenco's President and co-founder Una Sweeny with her eldest grandson, Patrick Ronzio. In case you're wondering, the photo is genuine. Patrick is 6' 9" (2,06 m) tall. Una Sweeny's height, along with her weight, age and her recipe for homemade Irish stew, are carefully guarded secrets.
